 Cultural aspects of Huvadhu Atoll

Intro

Huvadhu, Suvadive, Suvaidu, or Suvadiva is the atoll with most islands in the world. The atoll is located in the Indian ocean. It is south of the Suvaidhiva channel in the Republic of Maldives with a total area of 3152 km², of which 38.5 km² is dry land. The atoll contains 255 islandsIt is the second-largest geographical atoll in the country.

Unique features of Huvadhu kandu

This place is the peak of a submarine mountain, and perhaps an atoll in the process of formation. This submerged bank is very difficult to spot for at its shallowest point there is a depth of 6 fathoms (12 m). It looks like a paler blue patch surrounded by huge expanses of the deepest ocean.

dialect of Huvadhu atoll

The inhabitants of this large atoll speak their own distinct form of the Dhivehi language, known as Huvadhu Bas. Huvadhu Bas is a language/dialect of the Maldivian language spoken by the inhabitants of the large atoll of Huvadhu is one of the distinctive dialects of the Maldivian language from Southern Maldives. Because of the isolation from the Northern Atolls, and the capital of Malé, Huvadhu Bas compared to other variants has many distinctive features. One of these features is making use of the retroflex 'Ţ' as in Sinhalese instead of retroflex 'ṣ' used in northern variants.

History

  • The ancient sanskiritised name of this atoll was Suvadive. Its capital and the most important island was Tinadū ( thinadhoo (gaafu dhaalu atoll ). Thinadhoo was occupied with Male militia for years prior to the Suvaldive uprising and thus commonly referred to the island during that era as Havaru Tinadu. The term havaru means 'militia' in Dhivehi.
  • Historically the Huvadhu atoll chief based in Tinadu had a great measure of self-government. He even had the privilege, not granted to any other atoll chief of the Maldives, to fly his own flag in his vessels and at his residence. The flag of the Huvadhu Atoll Chief was similar to the flag of Nepal in cut, with two central black triangles edged by red and white bands.
  • There are many Buddhist archaeological remains in Huvadhu. Therefore, it is likely that this was a very important Atoll in that period of Maldivian history. None of these ancient remains have been properly investigated yet.
  • Due to its strategic placement on the main sea route around southern India, Huvadhu and the other southern atolls have a long history of contact from mariners sailing the Indian Ocean through the centuries.

 Infrastructure of Huvadhu atoll

"Maldives paradise atolls project is aimed to develop the residential area and infrastructure of Huvadhu Atoll for the betterment of its 35000 residents" says Special Envoy to president Ibrahim Hussain Zaki

The Special Envoy made this statement during a call with the Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice President of Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU) Li Jinhua.

Economic activities:
Seaplane Operations To Commence Between Addu and Huvadhu Atoll
an agreement was signed between Addu International Airport Private Limited and Island Aviation Services Limited to commence seaplane operations between Addu Atoll and Huvadhu Atoll. The decision was taken as a stride to develop the tourism industry and other economic activities in the Southern Atolls. It is further predicted that this would increase investment opportunities and job opportunities to southern islanders in their home islands, effectively reducing the need to migrate between islands. It also remarkably aligns with the government’s goals in the decentralization of the country.

Which aspect of the selected culture is important for future generations? How can we develop that cultural aspect?

dialect >> the dialect is slowly losing because of today's internet and transportation, which will lead to loss of history, and for future generations, there won't be any dialect. This can be reduced by teaching the dialect.
